START WITH THE BUSINESS

Business architecture makes strategy actionable.

Before choosing a system, understand what the business needs to be able to do.

Business architecture describes the capabilities, value streams, organization and information that create value. It gives leaders a common language for priorities, investment and change.

THE CONNECTION

Strategy becomes a chain of decisions.

01

Strategy

What outcomes matter?

02

Business architecture

Which capabilities and value streams deliver them?

03

Enterprise architecture

What must change across people, data and technology?

04

Roadmap & delivery

Who delivers what, in which sequence?

05

Outcomes & learning

Did the change create the intended value?

Governance keeps this chain connected: every initiative should trace back to a strategic outcome, a capability need and an accountable owner.

ONE ENTERPRISE VIEW

Connect the layers. Expose the dependencies.

Enterprise architecture brings business architecture together with data, application and technology architecture. The result is a coherent target state and a realistic sequence of change.

Business

Capabilities, value streams, services, ownership and operating models.

Data

Information needs, quality, stewardship and decision support.

Applications

Business systems, integration, portfolio fit and duplication.

Technology

Platforms, cloud, infrastructure, security and resilience.

WHAT GOOD ARCHITECTURE PRODUCES

Useful decisions, supported by useful artifacts.

Direction

Principles, a target operating model, capability priorities and target-state architecture.

Decision: Where should we focus investment?

Delivery

A sequenced roadmap, dependencies, transition states and clear initiative ownership.

Decision: What should happen first, and why?

Accountability

Architecture reviews, decision records, measures and a living repository connected to delivery.

Decision: Are we delivering the intended outcome?

STRATEGY TO REALITY / TWO CONNECTING VIEWS

The Golden Thread

Trace the reason for change all the way to the initiative that delivers it.

A goal sets direction. An objective and metric define progress. Courses of action are examined through affected value streams and capabilities, helping leaders shape initiatives that address the underlying business need.

Execution is a shared responsibility.

Different teams contribute at different stages. Architecture helps connect their decisions.

This view brings strategy, innovation, customer experience, business architecture, portfolio management, project delivery and change management into one execution journey. The involvement levels help frame collaboration; they should be adapted to the organization’s governance and roles.

The author’s public introduction highlights a gap between big ideas and coordinated action. Business architecture helps people understand the enterprise, agree its future direction and organize the changes required to reach it.

For this page, that perspective means building a shared business view, using it to inform decisions and developing an architecture practice that works alongside strategy, portfolio and delivery teams.

MY EXPERIENCE

Building the practice as well as the architecture.

As a DEJEM Group Board Member and VP Excellence, Enterprise Architecture & Transformation, I established the Enterprise Architecture function from inception.

This included its framework, operating model, service catalogue, principles, Sparx Enterprise Architect repository and governance, alongside the PMO / Transformation Office. The work connected corporate priorities to capability roadmaps and delivery.

Through Al Majid Digital Solutions, I led the Orbus Infinity enterprise architecture implementation for Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD Bank). Al Majid Digital Solutions served as the implementation partner, connecting architecture tooling with CBD Bank’s business priorities and implementation governance.

My earlier government architecture work covered business, data, application and technology architecture, with target-state roadmaps and integration priorities.
